QUANTUM SOUP - the video - takes the concept of "apparent intentionality" a step further, by accompanying the algorithmic music with totally unrelated algorithmically animated, computer-generated imagery. Aside from the brief opening and closing sequences, any correlation between music and visuals is completely coincidental (although it may not feel that way). Counter to the current artistic trend of causing various media to interact / inter-trigger, the QUANTUM SOUP ORCHESTRA project explores what happens when the brain is fed unconnected - but apparently related - chaotic stimuli. |
QUANTUM SOUP is a piece of music composed entirely using algorithmic methods. Essentially it is a proof-of-concept for Simon Le Boggit's artistic exploration of "apparent intentionality" - moments which feel like they must be the product of direct, mindful human manipulation, but which are actually the product of pure chance / chaos. SWARM is a piece of music which Simon Le Boggit composed entirely using algorithmic methods.
The visuals were created separately by Simon - he processed his original video of swarming bees in a way which makes visible the direction of movement of individual flights amongst the apparent chaos. The music (apparent order from chaos) and visuals (apparent chaos from order) were felt to represent two sides of the same coin. This "performance" uses computer-driven sound samples, kindly made available by the Philharmonia Orchestra (UK). |
